The best time to visit Cherating
Cherating is warm all year — the real question is what you want from it. The calm beach season and the monsoon surf season are opposites here, so the honest answer depends on whether you’ve come to swim or to surf.
The short answer
For a beach trip, go April to October — calm sea, sun, and the turtles (April–August for nesting). For surfing, come in the November–March monsoon, when the waves arrive but the sea’s too rough to swim. One season, two completely different trips.
Temperature
~28–32°C days, warm year-round
Wettest
November – January (NE monsoon)
Driest
June – August
Calm sea
Roughly April – October
Season by season
April – June
Best overall- Sea
- Calm — good for swimming
- Crowds
- Quiet, building
The sweet spot: the sea has settled after the monsoon, the days are sunny, and turtle nesting is starting. Quieter than the mid-year school holidays — arguably the best window for a beach trip.
June – August
Peak season- Sea
- Calm and warm
- Crowds
- Busiest — school holidays
Hot, dry and busiest, with Malaysian school holidays filling the resorts and chalets. Great beach weather and the heart of turtle-nesting season — book ahead.
September – October
Quiet shoulder- Sea
- Usually calm
- Crowds
- Low
Underrated. The sea is generally still calm, crowds thin out, and rates ease before the monsoon arrives — a good pick if you can travel outside the holidays.
November – March
Monsoon / surf season- Sea
- Rough — not for swimming
- Crowds
- Lowest (some places close)
The Northeast Monsoon brings heavy rain and a rough sea that’s unsafe for casual swimming, and some village places quieten or close. The flip side: this is exactly when Cherating’s surf is best — so if you’re coming to ride waves rather than swim, the “off” season is your peak.

What is the best month to visit Cherating?
April to June is the best window — the sea has calmed after the monsoon, the days are sunny, and turtle nesting is starting. May in particular is a sweet spot: good weather just before the June–August school-holiday peak, so fewer crowds and lower prices.
Does it rain a lot in Cherating?
Cherating is on Malaysia’s east coast, which takes the Northeast Monsoon head-on. The heaviest rain falls roughly November to January, and the mid-year months (around June to August) are the driest. Outside the monsoon, short tropical showers can pass through any time but rarely spoil a trip.
Can you swim at Cherating during the monsoon?
In the open sea, generally no — between about November and February the South China Sea here turns rough and is unsafe for casual swimming. Resort and Club Med pools still run, so a monsoon trip can work if you’re happy poolside — or if you’ve come to surf.
When is the best time to surf in Cherating?
Roughly the opposite of the swimming season. Cherating’s most consistent surf arrives with the Northeast Monsoon — about November to March, best around December to February — when the same swell that makes the open sea too rough for swimming delivers Malaysia’s most reliable beginner waves. The months most guides tell you to “avoid” are a surfer’s peak.
When can you see turtles in Cherating?
Turtle nesting runs roughly April to August, which is when guided baby-turtle releases happen and when you have the best chance of seeing turtles. Outside that window the turtle sanctuary is still worth a visit for its exhibits, but you’re unlikely to see turtles themselves.
