Where to stay in Cherating
From the all-inclusive Club Med to a RM 60 village chalet, here’s the honest rundown of every kind of stay in Cherating — and which fits the trip you’re actually planning.
Most people picture Club Med when they think of staying in Cherating — but it’s a closed, all-inclusive enclave, and it’s far from your only option. There’s a whole village of independent beach resorts and budget chalets that the all-inclusive maths never mentions. Here’s everything, ranked the way we’d actually choose for different trips.
The Cherating stays, ranked
From all-inclusive to budget chalet — in the order we’d weigh them up.
Club Med Cherating Beach
LuxuryClub Med· pool
Asia’s first Club Med, set in 80 hectares of coastal rainforest at the quiet northern end of Cherating, next to the turtle sanctuary. It’s the all-inclusive enclave the rest of this guide is the alternative to: one price covers your room, every meal, drinks, kids’ clubs and a long list of activities, on a private beach reached by a buggy ride through the trees. It’s the easy, switch-your-brain-off family pick — and the most expensive way to do Cherating.
- · 80-hectare rainforest setting with a private beach (reached by buggy)
- · All-inclusive: room, all meals, bar, activities and entertainment in one price
- · Kids’ clubs and childcare across age groups
All-inclusive — one rate covers the room, all meals, drinks and activities. Typically the priciest stay in Cherating; check live rates and current packages.
Holiday Villa Beach Resort & Spa Cherating
Mid-RangeCherating village· pool
The most resort-like of the independent Cherating stays, and the one most families default to outside Club Med. A proper beachfront resort on the South China Sea with two big pools, a small kids’ water-play area, a spa and a beach restaurant — 134 rooms, so it has the facilities of a resort at a fraction of the all-inclusive price. Not the newest property on the coast, but dependable, family-friendly and right on the sand.
- · Direct beachfront on the South China Sea
- · Two large swimming pools plus a kids’ water-play area
- · Spa, gym and tennis courts
from ≈ RM 200 / night (indicative; family rooms higher — check live rates)
The Legend Resort Cherating
Mid-RangeCherating village· pool
A large hillside-and-beach resort spread over 6.5 hectares, best known for its two enormous swimming pools — the single most-praised thing about a stay here. Most rooms look over the sea or the pools. The honest catch: it’s an older property and reviews are mixed, with recurring notes about tired rooms and upkeep. Come for the pools and the space and the value, not for a polished modern resort.
- · Two very large swimming pools
- · 6.5 hectares of grounds — plenty of space
- · Most rooms with sea or pool views
from ≈ RM 150 / night (indicative — check live rates)
Eastana Cherating Beach Resort
BudgetCherating village
Traditional Malay wooden chalets a two-minute walk from the beach, in the thick of the village and barely 500 metres from the turtle sanctuary and the Limbong Art batik workshop. It’s simple and the rooms are basic — this is a budget-to-midrange chalet stay, not a resort — but the location is excellent for the surf beach, the turtles and walking to food. Its Surf Club restaurant looks out over the sea.
- · Two-minute walk to Cherating beach
- · Under 500 m from the turtle sanctuary and Limbong Art (batik courses)
- · Traditional Malay chalets with private terraces
from ≈ RM 130 / night (indicative — check live rates)
Cherating Bayview Resort
BudgetCherating village· pool
A quiet, bungalow-style budget resort at the far, calm end of the main Cherating beach — the trade-off is a 20-to-30-minute walk from the cluster of village restaurants and bars. Two outdoor pools, an open-air restaurant and a clean stretch of beach out front. Some areas show their age, but for a peaceful, affordable beach base away from the crowd it’s a fair-value pick.
- · Two outdoor pools and an open-air restaurant
- · At the calm, far end of the main Cherating beach
- · Clean beach frontage
≈ RM 150 / night (indicative — check live rates)
Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Kuantan (near Cherating)
Mid-RangeNear Cherating· pool
Worth being upfront about: this resort is at Balok Beach, about 30 minutes south of Cherating toward Kuantan — not in Cherating village — even though it’s often searched as a Cherating option (and recently rebranded as Swiss-Grand). It’s a larger, more polished beach resort than the village chalets, with pools and full facilities, and a sensible pick if you want resort comfort and don’t mind being a short drive from Cherating’s surf, turtles and village.
- · Larger, more polished than the Cherating village stays
- · Beachfront at Balok with pools and full resort facilities
- · About 30 minutes south of Cherating, closer to Kuantan
≈ RM 250–450 / night (indicative — check live rates)
Cherating Chalets & Budget Stays
BudgetCherating village
This is the real Cherating the Club Med brochure skips — a laid-back fishing village turned surf-and-backpacker beach, where most places to stay are family-run chalets and guesthouses (everyone here calls them “chalets”). It’s the cheapest, most characterful way to do Cherating, and for surfers and independent travellers it’s the whole point. Standouts include Tanjung Inn (wooden chalets around lotus ponds in a garden full of birds), Residence Inn (a simple 3-star with a pool) and Payung Guesthouse (a sociable backpacker favourite from around RM 60).
- · Family-run chalets and guesthouses, most RM 60–170 a night
- · Tanjung Inn — wooden chalets around lotus ponds and gardens (≈ 8-min walk to the beach)
- · Residence Inn Cherating — a simple 3-star with an outdoor pool
≈ RM 60–170 / night for most chalets & guesthouses (indicative — check live rates)

Where should you stay in Cherating?
It depends on the trip. For a no-planning, everything-included family week, Club Med is the easy (and priciest) pick. For a resort with a pool at mid-range prices, Holiday Villa is the best of the independents. For surfers and backpackers, a village chalet (Tanjung Inn, Payung) puts you on the doorstep of the surf and the food for a fraction of the price.
Is Club Med the only resort in Cherating?
No — it’s the only fully all-inclusive one, but there are several independent beach resorts (Holiday Villa, The Legend, Eastana, Cherating Bayview) plus dozens of family-run chalets and guesthouses in the village. You don’t need to book Club Med to have a beachfront stay.
Can you stay in Cherating on a budget?
Easily. The village is full of chalets and guesthouses, most around RM 60–170 a night. Tanjung Inn (garden chalets around lotus ponds), Payung Guesthouse (a sociable backpacker pick from ~RM 60) and Residence Inn (a simple 3-star with a pool) are the standouts.
