A genuine, free turtle conservation centre on Chendor Beach at the northern end of Cherating, right beside Club Med. Run as a government hatchery since 1972 and open to the public since 1998, it protects the green and hawksbill turtles that nest along this coast — incubating eggs and releasing hatchlings to give them a fighting chance. The exhibits explain the turtles and the threats they face; in nesting season there are sometimes evening releases.

Our independent tip
Don’t expect a zoo — it’s a small, sincere conservation centre, and how much you see depends on the season (nesting runs roughly April–August). Call ahead on +6 09 581 9087 to check opening and whether any evening release is happening, and bring a donation. It pairs naturally with a stay at the north end (Club Med or Eastana, which is barely 500 m away).

How much does the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary cost?
Entry is free. It’s a conservation hatchery rather than a commercial attraction, so a donation is appreciated and goes toward protecting the eggs and hatchlings.
When is the best time to see turtles in Cherating?
The nesting season runs roughly April to August, which is when you have the best chance of seeing nesting turtles or a hatchling release. Outside that window you can still visit the centre and its exhibits, but you’re less likely to see turtles.
What are the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary opening hours?
Roughly 9:30am to 4:30pm, Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Mondays and public holidays. During nesting season there are sometimes special evening visits — call +6 09 581 9087 to confirm.
