The mangrove tour is a proper wildlife walk — the guide spots a green snake asleep in a tree (it hunts small fish at night, and is “poisonous but not venomous”) and explains it sheds its skin over a week or two.
He shows the near-lost craft of mengkuang (pandanus) leaf-weaving — leaves de-spined, soaked for weeks, dried, then woven into bags and mats. Only a few villages still do it by hand; Cherating is one.
The food is a tour of east-coast cooking — nasi kerabu, a grilled-chicken nasi mandi (he jokes “nasi is rice, mandi is shower — I don’t know how that relates”), and a feast of patin tempoyak with grilled tilapia.
